Mechanics' Institute Library & Chess Room

Founded in 1854, the Mechanics' Institute is a member-supported library and cultural organization that has served San Francisco's technical and literary communities since the 19th century. Its Chess Room and club, located in the building at 57 Post Street, is widely cited as the oldest continuously operating chess club in the United States. The institute hosts weekly chess events, lectures, and maintains a research library still in active public use.
