Old Bacon Academy

Old Bacon Academy, built in 1803 in Colchester, Connecticut, is a historic educational institution recognized for its architectural significance and role in social change. Originally a school for white males, it integrated non-white students in 1833 and began educating females in 1842. The three-story brick structure features Federal style details and a utilitarian design, while the adjacent Day Hall served as a high school until 1962 and is now a nursery. The Academy has educated notable figures, including governors and senators, and is currently part of an alternative education program. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, highlighting its importance in the evolution of education and social attitudes.
