San Francisco Cable Car Museum and Washington-Mason Powerhouse

The Cable Car Museum preserves the winding machinery and historic cars that power San Francisco's manually operated cable car lines. The museum occupies the Washington-Mason powerhouse and car barn and displays engines, wooden winding wheels, and retired cars dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city's cable car system traces its origins to Andrew Smith Hallidie's 1873 introduction of cable traction and the museum documents that early infrastructure still used on Powell and Hyde/Mason lines today.
