Union Station's Beaux-Arts headhouse and train shed

Washington Union Station, opened in 1907 and designed by architect Daniel H. Burnham, combines a Beaux-Arts headhouse with an attached large train shed and was one of the nation's busiest passenger terminals in the early 20th century. The headhouse features a grand marble-paneled Great Hall with coffered ceilings and ornamental plasterwork, while the steel train shed behind it originally accommodated numerous tracks and platforms. The station was designated a National Historic Landmark and underwent a major restoration and retail redevelopment in the 1980s.
