Howard Theatre - historic African American performance venue

The Howard Theatre opened in 1910 as a major performance venue for African American artists and audiences and hosted performers such as Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald. It declined and closed in the 1970s before undergoing a multi-year restoration and reopening in 2012 as a live-performance venue. The theatre is located in the Shaw neighborhood and continues to present music and cultural programming tied to its historic legacy.
