Monte Verdi Plantation

Monte Verdi Plantation, located in Rusk County, Texas, is a historic cotton plantation that played a significant role in the region's agricultural history. Established in the mid-19th century by Julien Sidney Devereux, the plantation was named for its lush landscape, translating to 'green mountain' in Italian. At its peak, it spanned 10,700 acres and was one of Texas's most productive plantations, relying on the labor of 74 enslaved African individuals. The plantation house, built in the Greek Revival style between 1856 and 1857, features six Doric columns and has been meticulously restored. Recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the site preserves the legacy of forced labor in cotton production and offers insights into the region's history surrounding the Civil War.
