Center Market and its replacement by the National Archives

Center Market was a major public market on Pennsylvania Avenue that operated through the 19th and early 20th centuries and supplied food to the city's residents and businesses. The market was demolished in 1931 as part of the Federal Triangle redevelopment; federal office buildings and the National Archives were constructed on and near the former market site. The National Archives Building now occupies part of the area where the market once stood, reflecting a shift from public food-market uses to federal government buildings.
