White House used for exterior shots in The West Wing

The NBC series The West Wing used footage of the real White House exterior for establishing shots while principal interior filming was done on soundstage sets in Los Angeles. Production used the White House's recognizable façades in opening and transitional sequences to ground the series in Washington. Access for such exterior filming requires coordination with the White House Communications Agency and Secret Service for security and logistics.
