Closure and transformation of the Charlestown (Boston) Navy Yard

The Charlestown Navy Yard, operated as the Boston Navy Yard for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, ceased active naval operations when it was closed as a naval shipyard in 1974. Following closure, many industrial shipbuilding and repair facilities were removed or repurposed and parts of the yard were incorporated into Boston National Historical Park and mixed-use redevelopment. The site’s transition from an active naval shipyard to a preserved and redeveloped waterfront area is recorded in federal and local records.
