Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern (underground reservoir turned art space)

The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern was constructed in 1926 as a municipal drinking water reservoir beneath Buffalo Bayou Park and was decommissioned in 2007. In 2016 the City of Houston and project partners reopened the cistern as a public art and event space, notable for hosting light-and-sound installations and guided tours that highlight its columned, cathedral-like interior. The repurposing of the cistern is a documented example of adaptive reuse of early-20th-century municipal infrastructure in Houston.
