Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire

On March 25, 1911 a fire broke out on the eighth, ninth, and tenth floors of the Asch Building, where the Triangle Shirtwaist Company operated. The blaze resulted in the deaths of 146 garment workers, most of them recent Italian and Jewish immigrant women, and exposed unsafe factory conditions including locked exits and inadequate fire escapes. The public outcry after the fire led to significant changes in New York labor laws, factory regulations, and fire safety standards. The Asch Building where the factory was located is a documented historic site.
