Sheboygan County Asylum

The Sheboygan County Hospital for the Insane, established in 1876, was a significant mental health facility in Wisconsin, transitioning from its original location in Winooski to a larger building in Sheboygan in 1882. This facility, which expanded over the years to accommodate up to 225 inmates, was not only a mental asylum but also served as a poorhouse and farmed its land for sustenance. It closed in 1940 and was demolished in 1960, with modern developments now occupying the site. The subsequent Sheboygan County Comprehensive Health Care Center, operational until 2002, has gained a reputation for being haunted, attracting urban explorers and curiosity seekers, particularly due to its historical ties to the asylum and rumored ghost stories.
