House by the Side of the Road

The House by the Side of the Road was a historic Cape-style house located at 61 School Street in Tilton, New Hampshire, built around 1783. It gained literary significance as the residence of poet Sam Walter Foss during his time at Tilton Seminary in 1877-78, inspiring the title of his famous poem. The house was recognized for its vernacular architecture typical of the late 18th century and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Unfortunately, it was demolished in March 2020, but a new house of similar design has since been constructed on the site, making it a point of interest for visitors and researchers exploring the area's literary and architectural history.
