1964 Indianapolis 500 fatal crash (Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald)

On May 30, 1964, a multi-car accident on the second lap of the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway killed drivers Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald when MacDonald's car burst into flames after crashing into the inside wall and other cars were involved in the ensuing pileup. Eyewitnesses and inquests documented that both drivers suffered fatal injuries in the wreck and fire. The crash led to scrutiny of race car fuel systems and vehicle design and contributed to subsequent safety changes at the Speedway and in open-wheel racing.
