Hotel Central (Sarajevo)

Hotel Central is a historic hotel located in the heart of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, built in the 1880s during Austro-Hungarian rule. Designed by Croatian architect Josip Vancaš, the hotel showcases a unique blend of Oriental and Islamic architectural styles, featuring horseshoe arches and decorative elements reminiscent of Middle Eastern design. Originally established on the site of the Ajas Pasha Mosque, which was destroyed in the late 17th century and again in a fire in 1879, the hotel has a rich history. After being largely destroyed during the Bosnian War, it was completely reconstructed in 2008, preserving its original façade while modernizing the interior. Today, it includes the Westwood Club & Spa and remains a prominent landmark in Sarajevo, attracting tourists and researchers interested in the city's cultural heritage.
