John Andrew and Sara Macumber Ice House

The John Andrew and Sara Macumber Ice House, located southwest of Winterset, Iowa, is a historic limestone farm outbuilding built between 1875 and 1885. This unique structure, notable for being the only stone ice house in Madison County, showcases vernacular architecture with its coursed rough cut stone facade and distinctive features like quoins and jambs made from quarry-faced stones. With no windows and two metal ventilation pipes on the roof, it offers a glimpse into 19th-century agricultural practices. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, it stands as a testament to the region's history and the Macumber family's legacy since their settlement in 1853.
