Karst and cave influence on Austin's groundwater

Barton Springs Cave is a documented example of the karst conduits in the Edwards Aquifer beneath Austin that channel recharge and springflow. Geologic and hydrogeologic studies have shown that sinkholes, caves, and conduits in Austin's limestone influence groundwater vulnerability, stormwater management, and land-use planning. The presence of submerged cave passages beneath city features such as Barton Springs has informed municipal policies on aquifer protection and development.
