J.H.C. Petersen's Sons' Store

The J.H.C. Petersen's Sons' Store, also known as the Petersen Harned-Von Maur Store Building, is a historic site in Davenport, Iowa, recognized for its architectural significance and rich history. Built in 1892, it was designed by Frederick G. Clausen and reflects the late 19th-century department store model, inspired by Chicago's Rookery Building. Originally a thriving dry goods store founded by German immigrant J.H.C. Petersen and his sons, it evolved into a prominent retail establishment until its consolidation in 1928. Today, the Redstone Building houses the River Music Experience, a museum dedicated to music, along with a coffee shop and restaurant, making it a vibrant cultural hub in downtown Davenport.
