Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (Ballard Locks)

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, commonly called the Ballard Locks, opened in 1917 to provide a navigable connection between Puget Sound and the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The complex includes a fish ladder that allows migrating salmon to bypass the locks, and the adjacent Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden. The site is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is a frequent visitor attraction for boat traffic and fish viewing.
