Maple View Sanitarium

Maple View Sanitarium, located in West Union, Iowa, is a historic building with a rich history dating back to its construction in 1903 by Dr. Frank Beach Whitmore. Initially designed to serve as a small hospital, it struggled to succeed and closed in 1905. The building later became a community hospital in 1920 and transitioned to a nursing home before being repurposed as a local history museum by the Fayette County Historical Society in 1975. Recognized for its historical significance, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and is now part of the West Union Commercial Historic District, making it an interesting site for tourists and researchers alike.
