Fort Independence (Castle Island)

Fort Independence is a stone coastal fort on Castle Island whose present granite structure was completed in 1833 on a site with defensive works dating to the 17th century. The fort is a focal point of South Boston's waterfront and is managed for public access by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, with seasonal tours of the fort interior. The surrounding Castle Island area, including walking paths and beaches, is a longstanding neighborhood recreational destination.
