Murder of Dee Dee Blanchard

Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard was murdered before dawn on June 10, 2015, in Springfield, Missouri. Her daughter, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, and Gypsy's then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, killed her. The pair met online in 2012 and began planning the killing about a year before the crime. After Gypsy posted a series of explicit messages about the killing on a public Facebook account she shared with her mother, neighbors alerted police, leading to the discovery of Dee Dee's body. The case eventually drew national media attention. Initial reports framed the homicide as part of a long-running financial-fraud scheme, with local media noting that Gypsy had appeared healthy and was able to walk despite prior claims of severe illness. Subsequent media coverage, derived mainly from Gypsy’s own later accounts and public statements, alleged that Dee Dee had misrepresented her daughter’s medical condition and compelled her to feign illness and use a wheelchair to gain charitable support and attention.
