16th Avenue Tiled Steps (Moraga Steps)

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps are a 163-step mosaic stairway completed in 2005 and designed by artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher with community participation. The colorful, ocean-themed mosaics run along the risers of the steps and have become a frequent subject of tourist photography. Photos and short videos of the tiled steps are widely shared on social media and are often repurposed or edited into travel- and city-themed memes. The site is a documented public art project and neighborhood landmark.
