Jefferson Market Library (former Jefferson Market Courthouse)

Constructed in the 1870s as the Jefferson Market Courthouse, the building is known for its Victorian Gothic design and distinctive clock tower that became a neighborhood landmark. Community efforts saved the structure from demolition in the 20th century and it was repurposed and reopened as the Jefferson Market branch of the New York Public Library in 1967. The site's adaptive reuse preserved ornate exterior and interior details while converting a former courthouse into a public cultural facility.
