Soldiers and Sailors Monument (Monument Circle)

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument is a 284-foot-tall neoclassical monument on Monument Circle that honors Indiana’s veterans of the Civil War and later conflicts. It was designed by architect Bruno Schmitz and completed in 1902, and its base features multiple allegorical sculptures and bronze relief panels. An interior elevator and stairs lead to a public observation deck that offers views of downtown Indianapolis. Monument Circle and the monument are focal points for annual civic events, including the city’s Circle of Lights holiday ceremony.
