Fort Nashborough / Bicentennial Capitol Mall - buried remains of Nashville’s 1780 settlement

The original 1780 Fort Nashborough settlement lies beneath and adjacent to the area now occupied by Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park. Archaeological surveys and digs in the downtown park vicinity have identified palisade postholes, privy pits, and late-18th/early-19th-century artifacts associated with the early Nashville settlement. A partial replica and interpretive markers near the park outline the fort’s footprint and summarize the buried archaeological remains uncovered during downtown redevelopment and park construction.
