Mirador (Greenwood, Virginia)

Mirador is a historic house located near Greenwood, Virginia, built in 1842 for James M. Bowen. This Federal-style brick structure features a distinctive deck-on-hip roof and a portico with Tuscan columns. Renovated in the 1920s into a Georgian Revival mansion by architect William Adams Delano, it was the childhood home of Nancy Langhorne Astor, the first woman to serve as a Member of Parliament in the UK. The estate includes beautifully landscaped grounds, an antebellum kitchen, a smokehouse, and the historic Sam Black Tavern, where notable figures like Thomas Jefferson and Meriwether Lewis once visited. Mirador was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in American history and architecture.
