Exchange Coffee House, Boston

The Exchange Coffee House, operational from 1809 to 1818, was a prominent hotel and coffeehouse in Boston, designed by architect Asher Benjamin. Located at Congress Square, it was the largest and one of the tallest buildings in the northeastern United States during its time. The establishment featured over 200 rooms and a five-story atrium, hosting various events including concerts and art exhibits. Notably, it served as a meeting place for influential figures discussing the establishment of the Suffolk Bank. Unfortunately, the Exchange Coffee House was destroyed by fire in 1818, resulting in significant financial losses for its owners.
