Washington Monument - obelisk and interior commemorative stones

The Washington Monument is a 555-foot, 5 1/8-inch marble obelisk on the National Mall completed in 1884 and maintained by the National Park Service. The monument's interior contains more than 190 commemorative stones donated by states, cities, civic groups, foreign governments, and organizations that are embedded in the interior walls. An elevator provides visitor access to the observation level near the top, making the structure both a symbolic installation and a public viewpoint.
