Washington Monument obelisk

The Washington Monument is an obelisk on the National Mall constructed of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss and stands approximately 555 feet tall. Construction began in 1848, was interrupted for many years, and was completed in the 1880s; it has long been recognized as a prominent commemorative structure honoring George Washington. The monument is managed by the National Park Service and includes an interior elevator and observation area.
