J.L. Hudson Department Store (former flagship)

The J.L. Hudson flagship department store on Woodward Avenue was for decades a major downtown Detroit retail anchor and has been described as the tallest department-store building in the world by number of floors. The Hudson's flagship store closed in 1983. The large vacant building was demolished in 1998, and the site remained the focus of redevelopment proposals for many years thereafter.
