Archaeological surveys during the National Museum of African American History and Culture construction

Before and during construction of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, archaeologists conducted surveys and excavations that documented 19th- and early-20th-century features and artifact deposits on the site. The investigations recovered material culture and structural evidence used to inform museum interpretation about the site's urban history, including its roles in Washington's African American communities. Reports and summaries of the work were produced for the museum and the National Park Service.
