Crocheron–McDowall House

The Crocheron–McDowall House, a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture, was built in 1857 in Bastrop, Texas, for wealthy merchant Henry Crocheron. This historic home served as a social and intellectual hub in the late 1800s, hosting notable guests including Gail Borden and relatives of President James K. Polk. After Crocheron's death, his niece Mary Ann McDowall, a talented musician, continued to hold music classes and community events here. The house has changed hands several times but remains a significant landmark, recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although currently a private residence, it occasionally serves as a conference center, making it a point of interest for those exploring Texas history and architecture.
