Union Station's Beaux-Arts rail terminal

Union Station opened in 1907 as Washington's primary passenger rail terminal, designed by architect Daniel Burnham in the Beaux-Arts style. It consolidated multiple smaller depots and was intended to be a grand civic gateway for the capital. The building underwent a major renovation and redevelopment in 1988 that restored historic spaces while adding retail and concourse facilities. It continues to serve Amtrak, MARC, and VRE trains as a central transportation hub.
