Monticola (Howardsville, Virginia)

Monticola is a historic plantation home located along the scenic James River in Howardsville, Virginia. Built in 1853 in the Greek Revival style for Daniel James Hartsook, the three-story brick house features a striking central portico and a semi-circular porch added in 1890 by Emil Otto Nolting. The estate includes original structures such as a kitchen building, smokehouse, and corn crib, reflecting its agricultural heritage. Notably, during the Civil War, it served as the headquarters for Union General Phillip Sheridan. Monticola was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in American history and architecture.
