Corcoran Gallery of Art (building and collection transfer)

The Corcoran Gallery of Art was founded in 1869 by philanthropist William Wilson Corcoran as one of the United States' earliest private art museums. Facing financial and governance issues, the Corcoran's collection was transferred in 2014 to the National Gallery of Art and to George Washington University as part of a court-approved plan. The historic Corcoran building at this address remains a notable 19th-century museum structure in downtown Washington.
