Rothko Chapel

The Rothko Chapel is a non-denominational chapel in Houston that houses 14 large paintings by Mark Rothko installed as an ensemble in 1971. The chapel, founded by Dominique and John de Menil, was conceived as a meditative space and the Rothko paintings remain permanently installed there and are rarely loaned for outside exhibitions. The building sits inconspicuously on a residential block and functions as both an art space and a place for interfaith programming.
