Old Post Office Pavilion and Clock Tower

Completed in 1899 and designed by Willoughby J. Edbrooke, the Old Post Office is a prominent example of Richardsonian Romanesque federal architecture in the city. The building features a 315-foot clock tower that has periodically housed a public observation deck. The structure survived multiple proposed demolitions in the 20th century and has been adaptively reused for commercial, office, and hotel functions. Its robust stone arches and tower remain a distinctive part of the Pennsylvania Avenue streetscape.
