State Office Block (Sydney)

The State Office Block, completed in 1965, was a modernist skyscraper in Sydney's central business district, known as the 'Black Stump.' Designed by Ken Woolley, it stood 128 meters tall and served as a hub for NSW Government offices, including the Premier's office. The building was part of a larger vision to create a modern government precinct but was ultimately demolished in 1997 due to changing government policies and discussions about its outdated facilities. Its demolition sparked debates about heritage conservation versus modern development, culminating in the construction of the contemporary Aurora Place designed by Renzo Piano. The State Office Block remains a significant chapter in Sydney's architectural history, reflecting the tensions between preserving historical structures and embracing modernity.
