San Fernando Cathedral

San Fernando Cathedral was founded by Canary Island settlers in 1731 and the congregation is one of the oldest continuous Catholic communities in Texas. The cathedral building incorporates 18th-century masonry alongside 19th- and 20th-century renovations, including Gothic Revival elements added in later remodels. It serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of San Antonio and is notable for its long history at Main Plaza and its preserved historic fabric. The structure illustrates the evolution of colonial Spanish ecclesiastical architecture into later architectural styles.
