Luzira Maximum Security Prison

Luzira Maximum Security Prison, located in the Luzira neighborhood of Kampala, Uganda, is the country's primary facility for high-risk inmates, including death-row prisoners and political detainees. Opened long before the establishment of Kitalya Maximum Security Prison in 2020, Luzira has a unique management approach, allowing inmates to take on responsibilities such as food cultivation and preparation, fostering a sense of community. With a capacity designed for 1,700 but often housing around 8,000, the prison also features a library of over 7,000 books and has a relatively low recidivism rate. This facility offers a glimpse into Uganda's penal system and the challenges of overcrowding, making it a point of interest for researchers and tourists alike.
