Rothko Chapel

The Rothko Chapel is a non-denominational chapel commissioned by John and Dominique de Menil that opened in 1971 and houses 14 large paintings by Mark Rothko arranged as a single ensemble. Located on a quiet campus, the chapel is intended as a place for contemplation and hosts interfaith programs and special events. Its secluded, windowless interior and modest exterior make it feel like a hidden spiritual refuge within the Montrose neighborhood.
