1980 MGM Grand Hotel fire

On November 21, 1980, a fire at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip killed 85 people and injured more than 600, making it one of the deadliest hotel fires in U.S. history. Investigators identified factors including combustible interior materials and inadequate smoke control; the disaster led to major revisions of Nevada and national fire-safety codes for hotels and high-rise buildings. Portions of the original building were later renovated and reopened under new ownership and names.
