Battle of Bunker Hill - Bunker Hill Monument

On June 17, 1775 colonial forces fought British troops on Breed's Hill and Bunker Hill in Charlestown in one of the first major engagements of the American Revolutionary War. Although British forces eventually took the ground, the heavy casualties they suffered demonstrated colonial resolve; the engagement is commemorated by the Bunker Hill Monument. The granite obelisk and surrounding park mark the battlefield site and were dedicated in the 19th century as a national memorial.
