Palmer Mansion

The Palmer Mansion, once the largest private residence in Chicago, was built between 1882 and 1885 for Bertha and Potter Palmer, influential figures in the city's development. Located on Lake Shore Drive, it played host to notable guests, including U.S. Presidents and European royalty. Designed in an Early Romanesque style, the mansion featured lavish interiors with diverse historic themes and a grand ballroom adorned with an impressive art collection. After Potter Palmer's death, the mansion changed hands several times before its demolition in 1950, making way for modern high-rise apartments. The mansion's art collection was donated to the Art Institute of Chicago, preserving its cultural legacy.
