The White House

The White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. Construction of the Executive Mansion, designed by James Hoban, began in 1792 and the first president to reside there was John Adams in 1800. The building was burned by British forces in 1814 during the War of 1812 and subsequently rebuilt and expanded; the residence contains 132 rooms and six levels.
