1978 MOVE Standoff and Arrests at 6221 Osage Avenue

On August 8, 1978, Philadelphia police engaged in a gun battle with members of the MOVE organization at the row house at 6221 Osage Avenue in West Philadelphia. The confrontation resulted in arrests of several MOVE members and subsequent criminal prosecutions on weapons and related charges. The 1978 standoff is part of a longer history of clashes between MOVE and city authorities, culminating later in the 1985 bombing of the same block.
