Alcatraz Island and Al Capone

Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on Alcatraz Island held notorious prisoners including Chicago gangster Al Capone, who was incarcerated there from 1934 to 1939. The island had earlier served as a U.S. military fortification and later became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; the prison closed in 1963. Alcatraz is now preserved as a historic site and museum accessible by ferry from San Francisco.
