The Abbey, Annandale

The Abbey is a historic house located in Annandale, Sydney, built in 1882 by John Young, a builder who aimed to create a garden suburb to rival Sydney's exclusive areas. Designed in a Victorian Free Gothic style, it features unique architectural elements such as a Gothic vault, a tower with gargoyles, and Masonic symbols. Although Young built the house to impress his wife, they never lived there. Over the years, The Abbey has served various purposes, including a boarding house and a venue for bohemian parties in the 1960s and 70s. The house has undergone significant restorations and is recognized for its heritage value, making it an intriguing site for tourists and researchers interested in Sydney's architectural history and cultural evolution.
