Aquia Creek sandstone used in the White House

The White House exterior walls were constructed from Aquia Creek sandstone quarried in Stafford County, Virginia and used during the building's original construction beginning in 1792. The sandstone weathered and after damage in the War of 1812 was later covered with stucco and painted white, giving the residence its enduring name. The stone's provenance and use in the White House are documented in historical construction records.
